Released in 1972, Phoenix marked a significant transition for Grand Funk Railroad. It was the final studio album to feature the classic trio lineup of Mark Farner, Mel Schacher and Don Brewer before the group expanded its lineup and shortened its name to Grand Funk.
The album combines the band’s trademark hard rock sound with more sophisticated songwriting and production. Highlights include the powerful “Flight of the Phoenix,” the energetic “Rock & Roll Soul,” and the radio-friendly “Rain Keeps Fallin’.” The closing epic “Loneliness” stretches over eight minutes and showcases the band’s growing musical ambition.
Although not as commercially famous as We’re An American Band or Closer to Home, Phoenix has become a respected album among Grand Funk collectors and fans of early 1970s American hard rock.
