This compilation LP presents an important collection of early South African jazz recordings featuring some of the country’s most respected jazz musicians, including Hugh Masekela, Kippie Moeketsi, Jonas Gwangwa, and John Mehegan. Originally recorded in 1959 and later remastered, the album captures a moment when South African jazz musicians were blending American bebop influences with African rhythmic and melodic traditions.
Released as part of the African Heritage series, the record documents the beginnings of modern South African jazz and the musicians who would go on to shape the genre internationally. The performances include both original compositions and interpretations of jazz standards, highlighting the expressive horn playing of Masekela and Moeketsi along with tight ensemble arrangements.
The album also features unique instrumentation such as pennywhistle, reflecting the township jazz traditions that would later evolve into styles like mbaqanga and modern South African jazz. Because of the historical importance of these musicians, this compilation remains attractive to collectors of African jazz and world music vinyl.
