Thetha – Dark Street, Bad Night | Vinyl LP | VG+
A strong mid-1980s South African funk / synth-soul album by Johannesburg group Thetha, blending township grooves, jazz-funk instrumentation and polished studio production. Dark Street, Bad Night captures the crossover sound that emerged in South African urban music during the later apartheid years — danceable, melodic and rhythm-driven, with elements of disco, soul and pop.
The title track “Dark Street, Bad Night” stands out as the album’s centrepiece with its saxophone lines and slick groove, while “Talk Talk” and “Dance Floor Lover” lean toward dance-floor funk. Side two moves into smoother territory with “Don’t Ever Go Away” and “I’m In Love.” The instrumental version of the title track is also included, a nice bonus for collectors of SA jazz-funk.
This release appeared on the Flame label, one of the key South African labels documenting local pop, funk and soul artists during the 1980s. Copies are not especially common internationally, and the album tends to circulate mostly within the South African market.
