A historic and culturally significant collaboration, Duke Ellington Presents The Dollar Brand Trio captures a pivotal early moment in the international recognition of South African jazz legend Dollar Brand (later known as Abdullah Ibrahim). Recorded after Ellington discovered the trio in Zurich, this session introduced the powerful Cape Town–rooted sound of Dollar Brand, Johnny Gertze, and Makaya Ntshoko to a global audience.

The music blends township rhythms, lyrical piano lines, and modern jazz structure with Ellington’s production support, resulting in an album that carries both political resonance and artistic depth. Highlights include the driving “Brilliant Corners” and the expressive “Dollar’s Dance.” This remains one of the most important early documents of South African jazz on an international label.

This copy is an early Reprise pressing (R-6111). The sleeve shows visible wear, creasing, and edge damage consistent with age, which affects collector grading. The vinyl is assumed VG+ unless otherwise specified. Early pressings of this title are sought after, especially by collectors of South African jazz and spiritual jazz movements.
