Released in 1988, Land Of Dreams is one of Randy Newman’s most personal and autobiographical albums. Rather than focusing primarily on his famous satirical character studies, Newman reflects on childhood memories, post-war America, family life, and growing up in the American South. The album combines thoughtful songwriting with Newman’s distinctive blend of pop, rock, orchestral arrangements, and American roots influences.
The record features contributions from notable musicians including Mark Knopfler and members of the celebrated Wrecking Crew circle. While not as commercially famous as Little Criminals or his soundtrack work, many Randy Newman fans regard Land Of Dreams as one of his strongest late-career albums.
